TYRN SEA v. 1.6 BetaBloom & mucilage preconditions · Calabrian coast

Archive

Two looks back: how the sea temperature and marine heatwaves have changed along the Calabrian coast from 1999 to today, and the archive of the daily forecasts issued by TYRN SEA.

Sea temperature over the years 1999–2026

How the sea temperature has changed along the Calabrian coast, reconstructed from the Copernicus reanalysis. Choose a zone to explore the trend, the marine heatwaves and the day-by-day course; at the bottom, a map animates the summers of the whole region, year by year.

Temperature trend

Mean annual and mean summer (June-August) temperature for each year, with the trend line.

Marine heatwaves

Days of marine heatwave per year — at least 5 consecutive days above the 90th percentile. The bar colour shows the year's maximum category (Hobday scale I-IV).

Year in progress (2026): data are provisional, updated every day from the Copernicus near-real-time (analysis) product, shown as a semi-transparent dashed bar. Marine-heatwave days are the year-to-date partial count; annual and summer means appear only once the season ends and are excluded from the trend line. When the definitive Copernicus reanalysis (~6 months behind) reaches these months, values are automatically replaced with the validated ones. Data last updated: 20/09/2026.

Records & trivia

The sea-temperature records for this zone, from 1999 to today. Copernicus data; the current year is provisional (NRT).

Records from 1999 to 2025 use the definitive Copernicus reanalysis; those marked prov. refer to the current year (NRT data, subject to small revision once the reanalysis arrives). The day-by-day comparison is inherently noisier than the means.

Anatomy of the year ···

The sea temperature day by day compared with the seasonal norm and with the marine-heatwave threshold (90th percentile). The animation starts on its own; use the controls to pause it or step through.

The map of the warming sea ···

Sea-temperature anomaly in the summer (June-August) of each year, against the 1999-2020 summer mean: blue below norm, red above. Here too the animation starts on its own.
