Each number is a 0–100 index computed from the physical preconditions of a bloom: sea temperature, stratification (calm sea) and marine heatwaves. The bloom measures how favourable these conditions are; the mucilage combines the bloom with the prolonged stagnation of the sea. Details on the How it works page.

How to read the two indices

Both indices range from 0 to 100 and share the same threshold scale: the higher the value, the more favourable the forecast conditions, for both bloom and mucilage.

Index	Level	Meaning
0–24	Low	Conditions within the seasonal norm: preconditions essentially absent for both indices.
25–49	Moderate	One or two preconditions already in place, but not enough to trigger a bloom or mucilage.
50–74	High	Overall favourable conditions: algal blooms possible and, if the sea stays calm for a while, mucilage too.
75–100	Very high	Heat, prolonged stagnation and marine heatwave all present together: preconditions fully favourable for both bloom and mucilage.
